Interview with composer Nicole Lizée | Nicole Lizée parle du projet RENCONTR3S

My name is Nicole Lizée, I’m from Montreal
and I’m a composer. I work a lot with turntablists and that’s
sort of been my aesthetic, forever really. Is merging worlds that are not
necessarily found together. When Nicole and I first started speaking,
it was as if we had known each other for many years. We shared actual interests, what we were reading,
what artists were delighting us, what performances we had seen. And as we were going through it we saw had
very similar ideas and interests in where we were going with our process. We decided to go with turntable as the focus of the work. Surrounded by the orchestra. So I sort of took the metaphor of the turntable
and applied it to the orchestra. So what happens in several sections of the
work, are, while the turntablist is performing techniques, the orchestra is simulating these
techniques. Now having that extra dimension of dance to
be added to the other elements that I’ve worked with before … it completely exploded. New colours and new life and just the possibilities
now have been blown out of the water really. I know Emily to be a completely original,
completely passionate and has great ideas. So I know that whatever she decides to choreograph
this work, it will be amazing. Collaboration really opens up mind and hearts
and I think that is the legacy it will leave. To see what has blossomed when when two worlds
come together and create something.
