Sonic The Hedgehog Composer Has Promising Words For Fans

Sonic The Hedgehog Composer Has Promising Words For Fans

You may not be as speedy as him, but you’ll
certainly want to race as fast as you can to see Sonic the Hedgehog on the silver screen
next year. Looper recently spoke with Sonic the Hedgehog
composer Tom Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL, who has scored films like Deadpool, Batman
v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Mad Max: Fury Road, Alita: Battle Angel, and the newly released
Terminator: Dark Fate. In conversation, we asked if there was anything
about Sonic that Holkenborg could tease — without spilling spoilers, of course. Holkenborg had some promising words to share: “The only thing I can say is that it turned
out to be a really, really great film, and it’s so much fun to work on it. Really great characters. Really lovely, really cute at the same time. So I’m looking forward for that to finish.” Anticipation for the project, based on Sega’s
beloved video game franchise of the same name, has been palpable from the minute Paramount
Pictures announced in October 2017 that it would be fast tracking the film to development. Hype continued to build in February 2018,
when Paramount confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog would race into cinemas in November 2019. Fans finally got their first look at the long-awaited
movie in a trailer that was released in April, 2019. “Ahhhh!” “AHHHHH!!!!” When that footage finally arrived, however,
reception was mixed at best and shockingly bad at worst. The majority of fans felt that the most important
component of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic himself, lacked a certain something in his design. As a CGI character interacting with humans
like Jim Carrey’s villainous super-scientist Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden’s friendly
Montana sheriff Tom Wachowski, Sonic needed to look picture-perfect. Many fans weren’t completely satisfied with
the way Sonic appeared in the first trailer for the film, and Paramount took the criticisms
in stride before making an important decision. Shortly after the unveiling of the first Sonic
the Hedgehog trailer, director Jeff Fowler announced that the special effects team would
be going back to the drawing board to give Sonic a design overhaul. He tweeted in May 2019: “Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren’t
happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed
to making this character the BEST he can be.” The filmmaker subsequently confirmed that
the redesign would delay the film, which is now slated to open in theaters on February
14, 2020. Since then, we’ve seen peeks of what could
be a possible Sonic redesign floating around online, with one photo even showing the new
Sonic on an in-theater promotional standee. The snaps suggest that the Sonic the Hedgehog
team has done a bang-up job improving the character’s appearance. In fact, it looks like the design team were
quickly able to give fans basically everything they could want from the reworked design. The conversation surrounding the original
Sonic design was mixed, at best. Some fans seemed to delight in collectively
roasting the character’s original movie design, poking fun at his creepy human teeth and odd
body proportions. While some fans were somewhat more positive,
that still left Paramount with a pretty clear indication that fans weren’t going to be happy. When the photos of the alleged redesign surfaced
on social media, many who were initially critical of Sonic the Hedgehog changed their tune,
complimenting the new design and admitting that they were keen to see the film. One even wrote on Twitter that the purported
visual update Sonic received looks so incredible that other teams handling Sonic-related content
and products could stand to learn a thing or two from the Sonic the Hedgehog film team. They wrote, “[Movie Sonic’s] redesign is so good it even
makes the modern sonic design from the games look bland in comparison.” It’s clear that everyone involved with Sonic
the Hedgehog is working fast to create a satisfying final product. And based on what Tom Holkenborg told us,
the film is going to be more than worth it in the end. Sonic the Hedgehog will hit theaters on February
14, 2020. Check out one of our newest videos right here! Plus, even more Looper videos about your favorite

  5. The redesigned sonic looks way better….I still woulda watched it even if they didnt change him though.

  6. Really really really… cool…

  7. The first design looks like my sleep paralysis demon

  8. I was hoping Junkie XL was going to say that the OST would use arrangements of classic sonic tunes…

  9. Who's faster?? Sonic or Speedy Gonzales…

  10. Today is my birthday can I get a happy birthday?

  11. It's gonna be a dumpster fire irregardless, no one wanted or was asking for this movie, the games have been garbage for over 2 decades and NO video game movie has even done alright let alone good.

Further proof the movie industry is completely fucked

  12. 2:50 Then those are NOT real Sonic The Hedgehog fans, so they don't count whatsoever. It's just that simple really…

  13. The script is the most important part they need to improve.

  14. Bruh it looks so good now. Frick.

  15. I'm still wondering when they release the second trailer

  16. "Turns out to be a great film"

    Ok Boomer

  17. Redesign or not, the movie's still going to have those horrible jokes from the first trailer. Seriously, if someone tells you they have a child zipped up inside a bag, CALL THE POLICE!!!!

  18. Sega wanting to make things 100% again baby

  19. Whole thing is a publicity stunt.

  20. you know if Hollywood and Paramount are going to remake our childhood and the live action then please do Freakazoid(Dexter Douglas) and Captain Planet !!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Give me shadow and we are even

  23. 👁️👄👁️

  24. Junkie XL does great work & I look forward to what he does here, I also hope the new film includes one or two of Crush 40's Sonic tunes at certain moments, that would be a nice touch

  25. 3:23 Something cool I just noticed, but if you look at Sonic’s new movie design you can actually see that despite his eyes being the same shape as before, there isn’t a white gap between them. And it STILL looks awesome!!!

  26. Yeah it needs to be redesigned, he needs to look like those photos because that’s how he looks in games! Best games I played as a kid! I just hope we get to see super sonic!

  27. The old movie design looked like the monster that chases me in my nightmares.

  28. Legit, if it looks like Sonic, I'm paying.
If not, I'll wait till Netflix grabs it to make fun of it lol

  29. I just want Green Hill Zone from Sonic one in the soundtrack

  30. Shadow the hedgehog better be in an after credit scene also open your heart and live and learn need to be there

  31. i like the one in the first trailer much better.

  32. Dead Pool?,BVS?,Terminator Dark Fate?
I love all those films except BVS, and those other movies

  33. Sonic is as fast as Flash ?

  34. I'm hoping that the movies good since we haven't really got that many good video game movies.

  35. They need to call up Crush 40 to do the soundtrack

  36. To Disney
    Take Notes
That is why Kimba er I mean The Lion King had mixed reviews.

  37. Show the team your support by seeing this movie in theaters!

  38. Am I the only one who thinks February 14th is the worst day to release because u know what happened in 2018

  39. Rolling around at the speed of sound
Got places to go, got to follow my rainbow
Can't stick around, have to keep movin' on
Guess what lies ahead, only one way to find out

  40. I will see Sonic simply because the studio actually listened to the fans. (I'll see it more than once if it's good).

  41. Since the redesign is so good apparently. It makes me believe that the original design was purposely bad for the press they’d get

  42. I can't believe people complained about all things…his teeth hahahaha

  43. I really want a end run at the end of sonic playing Can you feel the Sunshine, that will really make me happy even if the movie turns out bad, just please end the movie with that song.

  44. So we getting Super Sonic or no?

  45. The first design looks like a midget on steroids wearing a furry costume.

The Redesign looks more like Sonic and less of a midget on steroids wearing a furry costume.

  46. We should all see it because they’ve actually listened to criticism from fans. That’s worth a lot.

  47. It didn't matter anyways! They better not change the dates again…ready to go see it…

  48. Sonic in the first design looked like he sucked dick backwards.

  49. @BAEZANGELG 3:22
    You're a idiot lol

  50. ….Looks exactly like the design from the newer games wtf are they talking about?

  51. I do have my hopes for the film, but i also have plenty of doubts. I hope the movie is at least good, but i have a feeling it's just gonna be OK at best, based on everything else we saw in the first Trailer. And the funny thing is, i actually hope i'm wrong. I really hope this movie will finally break the "Video Game movie" curse, and bring us one that's actually good.
Like if you feel the same way!

  52. Paramount, give us the improved version of the trailer already, please?!

  53. And people say Hollywood’s going downhill 😏 Sure, it’s a single step, but in the right direction. If they’re ACTUALLY listening to fans, than this could be the start of a positive trend. I have faith.

  54. I don't think that the creators of this movie will truly understand how Sonic and Eggman (or Dr. Robotnik) are suppose to be and I don't care anymore. If Sega wants to keep trashing the Sonic franchise like it has no value, then be my fucking guess. I'm done wishing and hoping for Sega to get their shit together. I'm really starting to believe that Sonic and the gang would be better off with Nintendo.

  55. Hmm… Someone who worked on the film is praising the film?? I wouldn't get my hopes up. Grain of salt, people.

  56. I hope the movie ends up okay.

  57. He has to say that. He works for them.

  58. Why people putting the old design in the thumbnails 😂

  59. Its not coming out in 3 months it came out today

  60. It’s probably still gonna be hella cheesy based on the trailer though I’m expecting a trailer #2 in January.

  61. Well at least now jim carry back wont hurt him anymore for carrying the movie all alone

  62. Who wants to see HIS WORLD in the movie !

  63. Stardust speedway better be in the soundtrack

  64. They should just use Sonic game music, not some stupid rap from the 90s.

  65. I’m sure he’s saying those nice things because reasons

  66. I've NEVER played Sonic. He's a hedgehog right?

  67. I'm starting to hate this guy's voice, I think looper should rotate their voiceover guys more often my brain associate his tone with bullshit right away.

  68. I was hoping they would have news on the actual soundtrack. Like using the original composer and just guide him to adapt the score to work in a movie setting and him making sure the sound is Sonic. The updated trailer can use Sonic music now that they spent a couple of million appeasing them. That will work better than gritty 90s pop rap.

  69. They literally made the redesign exactly how I wanted it to be. I’m nothing short from impressed.

  70. I feel like the only thing holding this film back is the character design.

  71. Like why did they even let this happen to begin with. They should have known that the sonic / gaming crowd was not going to approve. I mean like, duh. 🤪🤯

  72. Really hope they play live and learn in this movie on behalf of their mistake of the uncanny valley design the first time.
