Viral Piano Player Gets a Surprise from His Idol, Composer Hans Zimmer

Did you come straight from work? Oh, yeah, yeah. [LAUGHS] So you work at Costco
in the tire center, but you play piano. Obviously, you played for–
how long have you been playing? So I’ve had music all
around me all my life, ever since I was little. I mean, my uncle had
a little keyboard, so it’s always been
in front of my face. It first started–
my cousin gave me a keyboard when I was 12. And I just taught
myself from there. Oh, you taught yourself? You didn’t– No, I’m self-taught, Yeah. Really, no lessons? No lessons. Wow, that’s amazing. Yeah. But you didn’t have
a piano at home, so that’s why you
played at Costco. Oh, well– [LAUGHS]
So, fortunately, I have parents that
support my music career. So they got me an
upright piano when I started getting really good,
teaching myself, and stuff. And then later down the line,
just after this video blew up, we invested– or I invested,
obviously– into a baby grand piano. Oh, wow, that’s great. So whenever you have a break,
you just walk over to the piano department and play? Yeah, I mean, they’re
not always there. Around Christmas time,
they’ll bring them in, and that’s where I’m at. That’s where you’ll find me. Do you put a tip jar
there so you can get tips? I should now. That’s a good idea, right? Yeah, you should. How long have you
worked in Costco? Roughly two years. Yeah, and how long– and what do you want
to do with your life? So realistically, I want
to become a police officer to support a family
and future children. Good. But, in a perfect world, I
would love to score a film– film movies, like movie scores. Oh, really? Yeah, so I want to be
like the next Hans Zimmer. Hans Zimmer, wow. And do you write songs now? You write your own? Oh yes, I write a lot
of my own originals. That’s great, so you
really do want to score. Oh, that’s great. You know what I mean. But I bet you’ll– after
this, you’ll score as well. All right, what are you
going to perform today? Today I’m going to perform
“Time” by Hans Zimmer from the movie Inception. All right, you like Hans Zimmer. Oh, I love him. All right, over there, please. Thank you. All right. [PIANO MUSIC] [LAUGHS] Thank you, thank you, thank you. Wow, I mean– It’s a dream being here. Yeah, I can’t get over the
fact that you’re self-taught. That is incredible. I know, it’s when you
want to do something, you’ll do anything to do it. Yeah, not all of us. I mean, I’d love to be
able to play like that. But we know that you
invested in a piano, but you’re paying
monthly payments. So our friends at
Shutterfly want to support what you’re doing. They want to pay off the
rest of your payments so that you own it. Right? That’s what you owe, right? Yeah. All right, that’s
paid off, all right? Thank you so much. And also you’re a big
fan of Hans Zimmer. So what other–
he did Inception– what other movies did he score? Pirates of the Caribbean,
Dark Knight, Interstellar– I mean, you name
it, he’s done it. Yeah, so you’re a big fan. I’m a huge fan. All right, well, look at
this monitor right here. Hey, Marcos. It’s Hans Zimmer here. I’m totally blown
away by your playing, and I hear you’re
really into film score. So why don’t you come down
to my studio and hang out. And we can jam and maybe
come up with something cool. It’s a pretty good room. I’ve spent all my life in here. Come have a look around. So you’re going to
go hang out with him. That would be fun. Yeah. All right, we’ll be right back.
