SO THE PIECE WILL BE ALMOST A YEAR — TOOK ALMOST A YEAR TO COMPLETE.>>WHAT ABOUT YOU?>>I HAD TWO MONTHS TO WRITE THE PIECE BECAUSE IT WAS FOR KIDS’ CONCERT. SO IT WAS LIKE KIND OF — DIFFICULT BUT IT’S A NICE PROCESS.>>SO IS YOUR PIECE, FAST, SLOW? WALK ME THROUGH THE PIECE OF MUSIC.>>THE IDEA WAS TO WRITE AS MUCH FAST MUSIC AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THAT WAS ALWAYS A CHALLENGE FOR ME IN THE PAST, HOW TO KEEP THE ENERGY GOING. SO IT’S A LOT OF FAST MUSIC AND THEN A NICE PEACEFUL ENDING TO BALANCE IT OUT.>>SO WHAT IS THAT OLD MOVIE, AMADEUS, ABOUT THE COMPOSER AND YOU HAVE THIS TROUBLED MUSICIAN WORKING LATE AT NIGHT AND TEARING PIECES OF MUSIC UP. WHAT IS IT LIKE WHEN YOU’RE WORKING ON A PIECE OF MUSIC? IS IT LIKE THAT AT ALL — DON’T TELL ME YOU DO IT ON AN iPAD OR SOMETHING.>>NO, I DON’T.>>IS IT ACTUALLY LIKE PENCILED TO PAPER?>>ACTUALLY, FOR THIS PIECE IT WAS DIFFERENT, BECAUSE I HAD TWO MONTHS, I HAD TO WRITE IT STRAIGHT ON THE COMPUTER. USUALLY BY HAND. BUT IT’S NOT GETTING CRAZY. YOU ENJOY THE PROCESS. IT’S FUN. IT’S REALLY FUN.>>IS LIKE YOU ON A LAPTOP FALLING ASLEEP AT NIGHT DOING THIS?>>NO. FOR ME IT’S AT THE PIANO MOST OF THE TIME WRITING ON THE MUSIC. SO PENCIL TO PAPER AND REWRITING OVER AND OVER AND FINALLY PUTTING IT INTO THE COMPUTER.>>IT IS A FRANTIC MOZART.>>EXCEPT WITHOUT A SCRIBE TO DICTATE YOUR THOUGHTS.>>WHAT IS YOUR PIECE?>>THE PIECE IS CALLED EL — IN ENGLISH IT’S THE BIG HAT MEN. AND IT TALKS ABOUT — IT’S VERY PROGRAMMATIC. THAT HAS A STORY BEHIND. AND YOU WILL SEE THE — I MEAN, I’M THOUGHT GOING TO TELL YOU THE SECRET.>>IS IT FAST, SLOW?>>NO, IT’S — IT HAS DIFFERENT MOODS BECAUSE OF THE — IKE A SCARY, SPOOKY STORY. SO IT HAS SOMETHING FAST AND OTHERS SLOW. IT CHANGES.>>I’M EXCITED.>>I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT THE MUSICAL DIRECTOR OF THE ANDRES ESTRADA. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH HIM?>>IT WAS THRILLING. I MEAN, HE HAD SO MANY IDEAS ABOUT THE MUSIC. EVEN BEFORE THEY BEGIN. HE’S LIKE DIGESTED THE IT SO WELL. SO SO YOU HAVE A WAY TO INTERPRET IT THAT YOU NEVER THOUGHT OF AS THE COMPOSER. SO HE TAKES IT BEYOND WHAT IT WAS ON THE PAGE. AND IT WAS SO FUN WORKING WITH HIM, MEETING WITH HIM, DISCUSSING SOME OF THE IDEAS.>>I KNOW YOU ARE EXCITED BUT ARE YOU NERVOUS BEING UP THERE ON STAGE AND HEARING YOUR MUSIC GO THROUGH THE CONCERT HALL?>>HECK, NO, THEIR WORK IS DONE. THEY’VE DONE IT. THEY’RE LIKE, GO, PLAY IT.>>TO SEE THE AUDIENCE REACTION?>>YEAH. IT’S EXCITING.>>BUT YOU FEEL LIKE NERVOUS BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW, MUSIC. ONE SECOND SOMEONE IS DISTRACTED AND SOMETHING CAN HAPPEN. IT’S LIKE YOUR FORMULA AND YOU LOOK AROUND AND YOU CAN MAKE A CONNECTION.
